ADB funds construction of Gereshk-Lashkargah road in Helmand

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is funding construction of the Gereshk-Lashkargah road in southern Helmand province.

Work on the USD 33.7mn project officially kicked off on Friday, as confirmed by the officials.

The project will connect 300 villages with Gereshk and Nad Ali districts and also the provincial capital, Lashkargah.

According to the officials, an Afghan company and a Chinese firm are in charge of the implementation of the project, and the government will closely monitor construction activities of the road.

“The road will resolve the problems faced by the people, and the Public Works Ministry will closely monitor the project,” said Ahmad Wali Sherzai, Deputy Minister of Public Works.

Meanwhile, Police Chief of 505 Bost zone, Esmatullah Dawlatzai, pledged to ensure security of the road as militants have a presence in areas close to the road.
