Afghan Foreign Minister to Attend the World Economic Forum in Turkey

Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul is going to attend the World Economic Forum on Middle East, North Africa and Eurasia in Istanbul on Sunday.

The theme of forum is “Roadmaps for Reform, Pathways to Inclusive Growth” and will therefore convene over 1,000 leaders in Istanbul, Turkey, to catalyze new partnerships for growth and human development.

Some of the questions that will be addressed are:

  • In light of the global economic contraction, how can governments and business leaders design and deliver new models to drive innovation and economic agility across this mega-region?
  • How can the region strengthen energy cooperation and deliver the high-value trade and investment in science and research that are critical to knowledge economies?
  • How can the social dynamism unlocked by developments in the Middle East and North Africa be transformed into a decade of entrepreneurial opportunity, human security and good governance

It is also reported that the Minister Rassoul would visit China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, scheduled for July 6. The participation in the summit is an attempt to further strengthen Afghanistan’s ties with the SCO member countries.

Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are members of the organisation, founded on June 15, 2001. Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Iran and Mongolia have the status of observers while Turkmenistan attends SCO gatherings as guest nation.

Musazai said President Hamid Karzai would also participate in the summit, where he is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart. He said the presidents would announce their willingness on signing a strategic cooperation agreement.

“The two leaders will announce on the occasion that they want to have a strategic cooperation agreement,” the spokesman concluded.
