Afghan Minister of Economy Abdul Satar Murad said on Tuesday that non-governmental organizations operating in Afghanistan would be expected to report to the Ministry on their projects and funding.

Speaking at the National Conference on Coordination, Transparency and Cooperation with Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Minister Murad said important strides need to be taken to ensure transparency, accountability and effectiveness of aid money and projects.

“This Ministry believes in continuous and close oversight of NGO’s activities and projects to enhance transparency and accountability,” said Minister Murad.

First Deputy to CEO Abdullah Abdullah, Khan Mohammad, also called for oversight of NGO’s contracting process with donors.

“Many contracts have been awarded to NGOs on the basis of personal relations,” claimed Deputy Khan Mohammad, “representatives from all ministries must pay attention to this issue.”

Meanwhile, NGO leaders denied the allegations and asserted that the level of transparency in non-governmental operations exceeds that of the government itself.

According to Afghan officials, there are currently 1,947 NGOs registered with the Ministry of Economy. Of those, 273 are foreign NGOs and 1,674 are domestic.
