Afghanistan to expand key Salang Highway

salang tunnelAfghan Public Works Ministry has launched a fundamental development plan for the Salang Highway, Afghanistan’s main link between northern and southern Afghanistan crossing the Hindukush mountain range.

The announcement was made at the National Conference on Development of Salang Highway for Next 50 Years Conference held at a hall near the presidential palace.

Addressing the conference, President Karzai regarded the project as  vitally important  for the country’s economy and social welfare.

The Salang Tunnel was built 47 years ago by the Soviet Union. Decades of war and excessive vehicle density have exposed the tunnel to the risk of collapse.

Public Works Minister Najibullah Awzhan said the expansion of the route will allow 32,000 vehicles to pass through Salang Pass compared to 16,000 vehicles currently passing through it per day.

The plan has six options, including building of a parallel road and an extra tunnel in the Salang Pass, which is 3,000 meters above the sea.

The project will cost over USD 1 billion, the minister said.
