ahadi[1]Commerce and Industries Minister Dr. Anwarul Haq Ahady said Afghanistan is likely to complete the accession process to the World Trade Organization this year.

“Afghanistan’s WTO accession process has gone well. We hope we would be able to complete the process in 2013,” said Minister Ahadi.

Minister Ahadi expressed his optimism about the process and thanked the United States for their technical and moral support during the process.

This comes a day after Kabul and Washington held trade talks and evaluated progress on the US-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). Ahadi led the Afghan delegation.

Afghanistan applied for membership to WTO in 2004. The country gained the status of a representative in the organization during that same year.

The membership is expected to bring economic opportunities to the country, enhance investment in the country and solve some of the major transit issues of Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, some pundits believe the membership would not be of any significance, as Afghanistan’s production level is very low.
