Deputy Minister, Government Spokespersons and Award-winning Journalists Announced as Paiwand Speakers

afghanistan social mediaPaiwand, Afghanistan’s First Social Media Summit, announced today on its Facebook page a list of speakers that include:

• Aimal Marjan, the Deputy Director of IT at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology
• Massoud Hossaini, acclaimed international photojournalist and the only Afghan journalist to win a Pulitzer Prize
• Adela Raz, the Deputy Spokesperson to President Karzai
• Ariana Delawari, an Afghan-American artist that has run numerous Facebook campaigns as well as a successful crowd-funding campaign
• Matthieu Aikins, renowned Kabul-based Canadian journalist that has written extensively on Afghanistan, including a recent piece on the political impacts of social media
• Sediq Sediqqi, the Spokesperson to the Ministry of Interior

“Afghans are exploring new social frontiers online, and I’m looking forward to learning more from them about it,” says Matthieu Aikins, who will be speaking on a panel with Sediq Sediqqi on social media and government transparency.

Paiwand organizers will continue introducing six new speakers on Facebook every Sunday leading up to the event. “Speaker Sunday”, as this campaign is called, is part of Paiwand’s ongoing marketing strategy that centers on social networks, especially Facebook.

“As Afghanistan’s first social media summit, we want to give social media users access to the content first,” explains Ahmad Shuja, one of the organizers of Paiwand.

Paiwand speakers come from a variety of backgrounds, but they are all among the most innovative social media users in Afghanistan.

Paiwand will soon launch another outreach campaign that will crowdsource speakers on Facebook. Crowdsourcing is a social media strategy that allows mass participation and open decision-making, enabling Paiwand to select speakers based on what social media users most want to hear about.

Paiwand will be held in Kabul from Sept 22-23, and will bring together over 200 of Afghanistan’s most influential social media users from all 34 provinces. The summit will consist of networking and community building between Afghanistan’s most active social media users, speeches from prominent social media experts from inside and outside of Afghanistan, as well as skills-building workshops.

Paiwand applications will be open until August 30th. Apply in:
