Donors spent 79mn Euros on reconstruction of Kandahar International Airport

kandahar airportThe US, Canada, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)and other donors have spent 79mn Euros in funds for the reconstruction of Kandahar International Airport.

Located 16 kilometers south-east of Kandahar City, the Kandahar International Airport serves as the nation’s second main international airport and as one of the largest military bases.

According to Pajhwok Afghan News, a facility within the airport with storage capacity of 4,000 tons of oil had been built.

Local businessmen have also extended support for reconstruction of the airport.

The 2009 surge in NATO operations in southern Afghanistan made Kandahar one of the busiest one-runway airports in the world, as the number of aircraft operations at the base was pushed from 1,700 to 5,000 flights a week.

The airport is expected to turn as the main hub for export and import activities in the near future.
