Afghanistan’s Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi has called on relevant government organizations to address the issue of embezzlement in the mining sector as incomes are reducing.
He alleged that mining industry’s incomes are being embezzled by powerful individuals and urged the government to put in place effective plans to protect national incomes.
This comes as the Afghanistan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (AEITI) indicated in its latest report that Afghanistan must have USD 3.5bn annual revenue from the mining industry, given the nation’s large mineral resources.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum said that revenues of the sector have declined due to a pause in mining contracts and the large debts owed by contracted companies.
