Etisalat Introduces 3G Service in Afghanistan

Etisalat has launched the first 3G services in Afghanistan, marking another achievement in the fast-growing telecom industry in the country.

Imran Afzal Janjua, head of Corporate Communication at Etisalat Afghanistan said on Monday that the 3G services enable GSM users to have access to fast internet on their mobile phones, connect to live video calls, exchange video, music and photos.

“We have been committed since we came to Afghanistan to exceed the expectation of our customers as well as entire nation of Afghanistan,” Mr Janjua said in a press conference in Kabul.

The Afghan Ministry of Communication and Information Technology says that more than 18 million (86%) of the country’s population use GSM services.

Etisalat paid US$25 million for the license, according to the telecommunications ministry.

“Afghanistan will earn around $100 million annually through 3G services”, the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Amirzai Sangin, said last week.

Etisalat Afghanistan is part of the United Arab Emirates-based Etisalat Group, which also has operations in Africa, the Middle East and South-East Asia.

There are five private telecom companies operating in Afghanistan.
