European Union funds fruit quality center in Balkh province
Costing USD 271 million (199,000 Euros), the center contains a laboratory to measure the quality of fruits.
Meanwhile, Adviser to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock informed that plans were undertaken to establish fridges in Balkh provinces to preserve fruits from being wasted.
Lack of proper refrigeration has been a major concern among Afghan farmers.
The Agriculture Ministry plans to establish 8 large cold storage facilities across six provinces: Kabul, Kandahar, Nangarhar, Balkh, Kunduz and Herat.
Each facility would have the capacity of storing 5000 metric tons of fruits. Funded from the Ministry’s budget, the facilities were being established at a cost of USD 28mn.
The construction of storages is expected to complete over the next 23 months.
