Fire sweeps through a multi-story market in Mazar-e-Sharif

fireA multi-story market on the Maulana Jalaluddin Balkhi street in Mazar-e-Sharif was gutted by fire on Friday at around 4pm, destroying at least 200 shops.

According to Balkh Chief Col. Abdul Razaq Qadri the flames leaping from three portions of the building also threatened a branch of the Bakhtar Bank in an adjacent building, adding that the firefighters were unable to extinguish the huge fire.

One shopkeeper said the fire afflicted a loss of USD 90,000 to his shop that was completely destroyed.

According to Pajhwok Afghan News, the police chief said they had requested the Afghan military and ISAF for assistance, but none of them had reached the site as yet. He said the fire could ravage the entire market if not put out at the earliest.

The reason for the fire is yet unknown. Reports say that the fire occurred in the Shahzada Market’s basement and spread to the third floor.
