Germany to reconstruct Pul-e-Khumri dam

Germany has pledged to rebuild the 40 year old power dam in Pul-e-Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province, in the near future.

Minister of Energy and Water Mohammad Ismail Khan said that the work on the dam would start once the costs of reconstruction were estimated.

A German organization had previously pledged 35 million Euros for the reconstruction of the two dams in the area during their visit six months ago.

Having four gates and three turbines, each turbine of the first dam has the capacity of generating 1,600 kilowatts of electricity, said Eng. Gul Alam, the power department head.

One of the gates has been destroyed and the three others partially damaged. Only one of the turbines is still functioning.

Germany and USAID had repeatedly promised to build the dams, but they were yet to honor their pledges, according to the Governor Munshi Abdul Majid.
