The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) held the government responsible for the destruction of over 400 vehicles that were parked in Chawk-e-Arghandi area of Kabul.
Deputy Head of the Chamber, Khan Jan Alokozay, suggested that the Ministry of Interior (MoI) must pay the Afghan drivers for the truck damages, as the Ministry was legally obligated to protect Afghans’ property.
According to reports, over 400 vehicles that were awaiting escort to Kandahar province caught fire late Friday night. Containing mostly gas tankers, the trucks are estimated to inflict losses of over USD 40mn on the owners.
The incident is being investigated, but early reports showed that the explosion was caused by magnetic bombs.
Taliban militants who have been regularly attacking western supply convoys in Afghanistan, claimed the responsibility.
Meanwhile, MoI spokesperson Sediq Seddiqi said the owner and guards of the parking lot were the first suspects and have been arrested.
He did not comment on the possibility of monetary compensation for the truck owners.
