High committee to assess the implementation of the National Development Strategy

andsThe high committee held its very first meeting on assessing the implementation of the Afghanistan National Development Strategy (ANDS) in the Ministry of Economy on Monday.

Spokesperson to the Ministry Najibullah Amin said the meeting was attended by 30 deputies and general directors of various government offices to confer on the framework and structure of the ANDS.

At the outset, Deputy Minister of Economy and meeting Chairman Hukum Khan Habibi provided a background on the ANDS and reflected on the achievements, challenges and importance of the ANDS.

According to Mr. Habibi, the Ministry of Economy has decided to share the assessment of the ANDS with all the key institutions of the government that have played a part in the implementation of the Strategy in the past 5 years.

The participants at the end of the meeting decided on the formation of a technical committee consisting of directors of policy who would work on establishing standard methods and procedures required for a successful execution of the ANDS.

ANDS serves as the country’s Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP). It consists of three pillars: Security, Governance and Rule of Law, and Socio-economic Development. The ANDS has been approved by President Hamid Karzai and the cabinet in April, 2008. Upon approval by the president, the ANDS was presented based on 15 years development goals and in the framework of Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper to the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the international community and endorsed in June, 2008.

The Ministry of Economy was given the responsibility to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the ANDS by indicators and milestones. The Ministry of Economy is the main coordination body for social and economic policies and is to analyze data and progress measured by indicators provided by line ministries and the Central Statistics Organization (CSO).
