Illegal excavation of precious stones in Nuristan

emerladA group of people has been reportedly involved in illegal excavation and trading of precious stones and gems in eastern Nuristan province.

Nuristan Mines Department Chief Eng. Ashiqullah Hamkar told Pajhwok Afghan News that in the absence of the government’s writ, illegal excavation and trade of valuable gems and stones in the province has become rampant.

He called on the government to strengthen security for the mines and take measures that would enable the government to generate revenue through authorized utilization of the mines.

He further proposed imposing levy and custom duty on exports of precious stones.
