Increase in Wheat Yields in Nangarhar and Laghman

Agricultural officials reported that wheat production in Nangarhar and Laghman provinces has gone up by 20% compared to last year’s increase.

The yield increase was mainly due to adequate rainfall and the use of quality seed. The crop was sown in 70 percent of Nangarhar’s 90,000 hectares of farm land, according to Nangarhar Agriculture Director Mohammad Hussain Sapi.

This year’s overall yield collected from the 22 districts stood at 350,000 metric tons against last year’s 310,000 metric tons, the director said.

Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock had played a role in the improvement of wheat production by supplying 600 metric tons of high-quality seeds and 800 tons of fertilizer to farmers for this year’s cultivation with the help of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Exact figured for this year’s yield in Laghman have not been reported, as crops in Alishing and Daulat Shah districts of the province are yet to be harvested. However, Laghman Agriculture Director Mahsil Khan Dawlatzai did report that 13,000 hectares of land was grown with the wheat crop in Laghman.

Agriculture expert Khan Wali Kamran said despite international assistance, the agriculture ministry had been unable to build a proper irrigation system in remote parts of the country.

He suggested that the government should make farmer’s access to market easier and smoother by constructing farm-to-market roads. He also added that the government should purchase surplus wheat from farmers on reasonable rate and store it for next year’s use as seed. The government interference would mean a price floor on wheat which would raise the market price of wheat. As a result of which the quantity demanded decreases, while supply goes up.
