Italy pledges aid to transform Herat Airport

Herat airportThe Italian government has pledged USD 200mn in aid money to Afghanistan, most of which is earmarked for revamping and expanding Herat Airport.

The aid money will be used to build a new terminal and runways, fund new equipment for airplanes and passengers and construct the biggest station for airplanes at the airport in Herat, Afghanistan’s third largest city.

The objective of the aid is to transform Herat airport into the biggest cargo airport in Afghanistan.

The aid will also fund construction of Herat Ring Road and Chesht-Herat Highway.

Herat Governor Fazlullah Wahidi said the projects would be supervised by Afghan related organizations.

The project are scheduled to be completed by 2017.
