[1]A source of Ministry of Mines declared that eighty three coal mines in Bamyan where illegal and non-technical extraction was taking place were closed in a special operation.

Deputy Minister of Mines Nasir Ahmad Durrani headed a team of delegation with the authorization from the Council of Ministers to evaluate the situation of coal mines in Bamyan province. It was discovered that illegal extraction was being carried out by the local residents in 83 sites, most of which located in the areas of Ashishta and Cleach of Bamyan Province.

Currently these areas are under the control of security forces and it is expected that according to the contract the Ainak Cooper mine will be placed at the disposal of the MCC Company for production of energy and building of electricity production units at the capacity of 400 Mega Watts.

The illegal extractors are given till mid-June to end their extraction work.

Ministry of Mines has decided that those who will lose their job in those sites will be given jobs in other projects under the control of North Coal Enterprise especially in Tala and Barfak coal mines in the north.

Baghlan would be the next targeted province for delegation on its mines. The delegation on the mines of Baghlan was delayed earlier due to heavy rainfalls and floods that caused severe damages to the residents. The illegal extraction works would be closed down in Baghlan within a month.

The government has recently shifted its attention towards Afghanistan’s natural resources to potentially build the national economy after foreign troops withdrawal in 2014.

Afghanistan is sitting on vast amounts of untapped natural resources which are believed to be the key to steer Afghanistan’s economy towards development and generate employment opportunities.
