More than 10 districts in Badakhshan are cut off due to snow

badakhshan snowDistricts in northern Badakhshan province, including Ashkashim, Sheghnan, Koshitan, Raghistan and Shekay, are cut off due to heavy snow fall, according to the local officials.

Provincial spokesman Abdul Maroof Rasikh warned that the food aid provided by the National Disaster Management Authority is insufficient and called on the government to send more food and supplies to the province.

“If the roads remain blocked the same as last year, the residents of these 10 districts will face major issues,” Rasikh warned.

Dozens were killed and several others went missing in avalanches last year, according to the Tolo News.

Shekay District, which borders Tajikistan, was completely swept away.

Badakhshan is one of the country’s poorest and most remote regions. Parts of it are shut off by heavy snow for at least six months of the year.
