Youth and civil society members protested on Tuesday in eastern Nangarhar province demanding the government to get mega infrastructure projects going.
The protestors threatened they would close all roads leading to central Kabul unless the government launches the Naghlo power station, second lane of the Kabul-Jalalabad highway and Behsud bridge projects within three days.
The protestors claim that the government is neglecting Jalalabad and the province’s budget is transferred to Northern provinces. As a result of which work on reconstruction projects has stopped during the current year.
Slogans were chanted against Ismail Khan, the Minister of Power and General Mohammad Qaseem Fahim.
Noor Shah Noorani, a representative of the Civil Society, said that the protestors will not stop until their demands are fulfilled.
Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal, the deputy governor who visited the square, said that in fact the government is not paying attention to the province.
The province has not received its developmental budget so far to start reconstruction projects, the deputy governor informed and added “we have no authority to promise the protestors within three days but we shall struggle together to complete all these three projects.”
