[1]Mohammad Asif Rahimi, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock announced in a press conference that several projects costing USD 14.2 million would be implemented to help improve the agricultural sector of Afghanistan.

These projects include protection of forests, construction of water reservoirs, setting up fish farms and promoting saffron cultivation.

About USD 11 million of the project will be allocated from the annual budget of the ministry itself, said Minister Rahimi.

Other facilities for the farmers, such as cold storages, greenhouses, food-processing centres and farmer-capacity building centers would be also implemented this year.

Agriculture is the main component of Afghanistan’s GDP. Agriculture is a potential path to Afghanistan’s progress. Investing in this sector can help Afghanistan gain competitive advantage over its competitors from the neighborhood and help win the market for the agricultural products.

Moreover, providing facilities for developing various other agricultural products will encourage farmers to move away from poppy cultivation.
