President Ghani calls for transparency in the mining industry

President Ashraf Ghani visited the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP)on Sunday and called on the officials to enhance capacity and transparency in the mining industry.

“The Ministry must not be the creator of common works, but it must be the creator of the wealth,” said Dr. Ghani.

He stressed that professional and experienced figures are needed to run such key sectors. Despite being one of the poorest nations in the world, Afghanistan is endowed with vast quantities of natural resourced worth trillions of dollars. Experts believe that the abundance of the natural resources could lift Afghanistan out of poverty and generate job opportunities.

Security has remained one of the biggest challenges facing the mining industry. Infrastructure, such as energy, roads, and railroads, is also a much needed factor for the development of mines.
