Presidential election important for Afghanistan- UN official
Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Political Affairs in Afghanistan Nicholas Haysom emphasized on the importance of elections in Afghanistan at the International conference on “Afghanistan- 2014: Prospects of Development of Situation, Security Challenges and Threats for Central Asia in Connection with International Security Assistance Force Withdrawal.”
According to the official, elections in Afghanistan require financial support to fill the gap in the country’s economy.
“We need to strengthen security in the country. If the political transition fails, it will affect the level of security, the investment climate and the economy as a whole,” AKI Press quotes Nicholas Haysom said.
He also pointed out that assistance to Afghanistan after 2014 would significantly be reduced; hence, further work to ensure security in Afghanistan was necessary.
The national security forces have demonstrated the potential that is able to meet the challenges, but it is necessary to be prepared for further challenges, Nicholas Haysom said.
