[1]Ghazni officials reported that the production of wheat and some other grains in Ghazni has declined.

“Constant droughts have resulted in heavy losses to crop,” said Sultan Hussain Abbasyar, Director of Agriculture in Ghazni.

Situated in the center of the country, Ghazni is one of the agricultural provinces that receive most of its water reserves from springs, surface water and rain.

“In previous years, Ghazni would produce 94-143 tons of wheat, which was sufficient to meet the needs of the people in the province,” said Mr. Abbasyar.

More than 80% of the residents farm on their lands and are concerned about the lack of water.

In recent years, Ghazni has been beset by droughts, heavy snow, and flooding, all at different times.During the periods of drought, many parts of the province, especially Ghazni City, saw heavy building in the flood plains of the province’s rivers. Flooding caused by heavy rain and snow in recent years has taken heavy tolls in property in lives in these newly constructed areas.

In addition to the droughts, farmers also complain about the lack of cold storage rooms for their fruits and vegetables. The farmers say that due to lack of facilities their products are sold at half of the price in the market.
