This comes as concerns about the incapability of Afghan forces to take over fully responsibility of the country’s security are rising.

The Afghan government has acknowledged the existing shortfall in building up a fully equipped and powerful air and land forces.

“We have provided as many types of equipment for the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) as possible. However, we have to acknowledge that there are shortfalls. We are negotiating with the Afghan government and the Afghan army on how to overcome these shortfalls. One of example of these negotiations is the recent announcement of the US Air Force to buy 20 fighter jets for the Afghan Air Force,” said Brigadier General Gunter Katz.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense (MoD) was optimistic that the new assistance would address some of the challenges of the Afghan forces and said the planes would be used for two operations: bombardment missions and discovering missions.

MoD expects that Afghan military forces will be equipped with fighter planes, transport planes and drones within few years.
