US Gives $30 Million in Food Assistance to Vulnerable Afghans
The contribution by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is part of an ongoing international effort to improve food security and nutrition for Afghans, particularly natural-disaster victims, the internally displaced and those living in chronic poverty.
Malnourished children, school children and pregnant women also receive assistance under the WFP program, whose work focuses on Afghanistan’s 184 most food-insecure districts.
Since 2010, USAID has provided more than 270,722 metric tons of mixed commodities valued at some $365.5 million to WFP’s operations in Afghanistan.
To address the underlying causes of food insecurity and malnutrition, USAID also funds health, agriculture, and economic growth programs designed to strengthen the Afghan government’s capacity to improve people’s access to health services, increase farmers’ productivity and market access, and create sustainable job opportunities.
