Top 5 Bollywood films on Friendship
Most Bollywood films are ‘mushy romantic sagas’, based on tales of forgotten love, lost love and love in every other form. But every so often there have been a few striking films that dealt with the theme of friendship. They say ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’. Bollywood has from time to time broken away from the stereotypical love tales and made some beautiful films on friendship that have made us laugh and cry.
So in honour of Friendship Day, here are five of the best friendship films from Bollywood:
Sholay: Jai and Veeru have always been iconic characters in the history of Bollywood. Amidst a tale of revenge and vendetta, Ramesh Sippy gave birth to two characters who also became synonymous for strong friendship. The song Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge is an ode to the strong bond between the two friends.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: The film gave friendship a different dimension. While ‘Pyaar dosti hai‘ became a catchphrase, we started looking out for the Rahuls and Anjalis in our friend circles. Still one of the best films made on friends, you can still watch reruns of the film without getting bored. Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan’s chemistry in the first half took the film to a different level. Their separation ripped us apart and their reunion had us weeping like a baby. While it is also a love story, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai would never be the same without their lovely friendship.
Dil Chahta Hai: Farhan Akhtar proved his mettle with his debut directorial vehicle focusing on three friends Akash, Sameer and Siddharth. He also became one of those few filmmakers who understood the audience pulse well. Dil Chahta Hai still brings back fond memories of our friends and rightly so!
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: A beautifully penned film, Zoya Akhtar broke the shackles of stereotypic filmmaking, delivering a gem like this one. The song Ik junoon perfectly captures the flavour of the film. And haven’t we all planned or daydreamed of a road trip with our friends like Arjun, Imran and Kabir in the film!
Gunday: While Gunday dealt with the fight between two coal mafias, it also focused on the emotional bond that Bickram and Bala shared between them. And the last shot from the film stands as the biggest proof of how friendship can triumph over love and fragile relationships!
