Sanctions on Iran regime, brunt on ordinary Iranians

The sanctions imposed on Iran by the West, aimed at punishing the Iranian regime for not complying with international rules over nuclear programs, have resulted in putting the lives of many ordinary people in Iran in danger.

Many people including children afflicted with deadly diseases are suffering due to lack of proper drugs, which were previously imported from other countries. Now, most of those countries have to abide by the sanctions imposed by the US and its European allies.

Regarded as economic warfare against the Iranian government, the sanctions are targeting ordinary people.

The prices of commodities in the country are soaring. Poultry, Iran’s staple food, is hit with what is dubbed as “chicken crisis” with prices doubling since last year.

Moreover, officials cannot transfer money abroad and attend conferences abroad.

The banking sanctions are forcing Iranians to rely on a cash-based economy, which increases the chances of black market participation.

Does pressure on the people translate into pressure on the government to halt its nuclear program expansion? That shall remain a question in a non-democratic nation such as Iran where people pressure on the government is very limited.
