South Korean Court Bans Sales of Apple and Samsung

A South Korean court imposed a limited on national sales of the two technology giants, Samsung and Apple, ruling that the two companies had infringed each other’s patents.

The sales ban will apply to Apple’s iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and its tablets the iPad and iPad 2.

Samsung products affected by the ban include smartphone models Galaxy SI and SII and its Galaxy Tab and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet PCs.

A jury in California ruled on Friday that Samsung should pay Apple $1.05bn in an intellectual property dispute in the US, saying several of Apple’s software and design patents were breached by Samsung.

Samsung’s claim that Apple had infringed several of its patents was rejected and no damages were awarded.

Samsung was “wilful in its infringement” in many of the cases, said the jury.

The verdict came after the nine-person jury considered 700 questions about each sides’ claim that its rival had infringed its intellectual property.

The two firms account for more than half of global smartphone and tablet computer sales. Samsung is likely to appeal the ruling.

Although a large majority of the disputed patents and designs swayed in Apple’s favor, not all of Apple’s claims were upheld.

Apple may now seek an import ban of some of Samsung’s products, blocking them from the US market.
