[1]A huge explosion, caused by gas leak, at Venezuela’s biggest refinery, Amuay, resulted in killing 30 people, wounding dozens more and halting operations at the facility.

The refinery, one of the biggest in the world, produces 645,000 barrels a day.

Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez signaled that there would be little impact on fuel prices, as no production units at the Amuay refinery were affected and that there were no plans to halt exports.

The explosion occurred at 01:11 (05:41 GMT) on Saturday and had been caused by a gas leak.

“The gas cloud exploded, igniting at least two storage tanks and other facilities at the refinery,” the energy minister told state TV,” said Mr. Ramirez.

The incident has caused appreciable damage to infrastructure and to houses opposite the refinery.

Amuay, together with a neighboring facility, forms part of the Paraguana Refining Center, the second-biggest refinery complex in the world, with an overall capacity of 955,000 bpd.
