The Afghan government will establish 12 agriculture products’ processing and packaging centers in various provinces of Afghanistan at a total cost of USD 1.6mn.
An agreement to that effect was signed between Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) and a private company called Agroindust Company in Kabul on Saturday.
MAIL Minister Asadullah Zamir said the centers would be built in Nangarhar, Paktika, Kunduz and Balkh provinces.
“Each center would have the capacity to process 7 metric tons of fruits a day and would have facilities of washing, drying, arranging and packaging of fruits,” said Minister Zamir.
Under the contract, the company is responsible for collecting, drying, grading, washing, packaging and presenting the products to the market.
This comes as Afghan farmers have repeatedly requested the government to build processing facilities across the country.
According to Minister Zamir, around 45% of domestic fruits decayed each year due to lack of processing facilities.
Presently, 86 agriculture products’ processing centers are operational in the country. The Ministry opened 19 such centers last month in Kabul, Kandahar, Herat, Nangarhar, Balkh and Paktia provinces.
