Afghanistan continues Iran oil purchase despite pressure from the US

afg-iranAfghanistan says it will continue to purchase oil from Iran, Afghanistan’s main oil importer.

The US Department of State has banned Afghanistan along with many other countries from buying Iran’s crude oil, in attempt to pressure Iranian government to halt their nuclear energy program.

Sanctions from the US and the EU on Iran’s financial sectors and oil entered into force last summer of 2012.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
