Afghanistan, Iran and India to sign pact on Chabahar port soon

chabahar portAfghanistan, Iran and India are due to sign a trilateral pact on the Chabahar port soon, announced the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

Situated in southeastern Iran,  Chabahar port is about 1000km closer to Afghanistan than the Karachi Port, through which most of Afghanistan’s exports and imports take place.

The port serves as the best alternative to the Pakistan’s Karachi Port where export activities are constantly interrupted by political restrictions and high storage cost.

The Afghan government has assured its commitment to work with Iran and India to finalize the transit agreement in a bid to link Afghanistan with the regional countries.

The agreement is expected to address the many transit issues that Afghanistan are faced with.

The port is connected to the city of Zarnaj in Afghanistan’s southwestern province of Nimruz, which is 700km from southeastern Iran.

Through the port, Afghanistan will be able to export its products directly to India, Kazakhstan, Gulf and European states in an efficient manner.
