Boycott against Pakistan's Currency in Paktika

[1]Businessmen and shopkeepers in southeastern Paktika province on Tuesday promised a boycott of the Pakistani currency that was causing them losses.

According to the shopkeepers’ association head Gulzada, the Pakistani rupee and the US dollar were the key reason behind sluggish trade activity in the province.

He said traders incurred losses when they purchased items in afghanis and dollars in Ghazni and Kabul and then sold them to customers back in the province in the Pakistani currency.

“The value of the rupee fell sharply last year, landing shopkeepers in trouble,” he recalled. As a result, he said, they would not accept the rupee.

Ahmad Shah, a shopkeeper dealing in food items, said acceptance of the rupee marginalized their annual profits. He claimed to have suffered a loss of a million afghanis last year.

“Afghanistan has its own currency and the government should ban the use of the Pakistani rupee in business deals,” he suggested.

Karim Khan, an auto spare parts seller, said although his business was a lucrative one, his income remained zero, because all deals were carried out in the rupee. Not only common people, but government officials, also used the Pakistani currency, he alleged.

Haji Adam, a moneychanger, confirmed government officials exchanged afghanis into rupees before shopping in the bazaar. The ups and downs in the rupee value have been a reason for disputes between shopkeepers and customers.

Officials, meanwhile, confirmed the problem. Governor Muhibullah Samim acknowledged the government’s responsibility for addressing the issue.

He said security officials had been ordered to prevent people from selling and buying in the Pakistani currency and that more measures would be taken to stop the practice.

In the provinces which border Pakistan, the use of the rupee is in common, despite government’s appeals for the use of the afghani.
