Food items dispatched to Paroon after months of road blockade

NuristanA highway has temporarily reopened that allowed for food items to be delivered to residents in Paroon, capital of eastern Nuristan province.

Fifty pick-up vehicles laden with food items reached Paroon from Chapa Dara district of Kunar, western part of Kunar province that borders Nuristan.

The highway reopened after months of an operation involving Afghan National Army (ANA) troops and police in Chapa Dara district.

Kunar Police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Habib Syedkhel told Pajhwok Afghan News (PAN) that Taliban insurgents had destroyed a wooden bridge in Galsak area, causing food shortages and leading to increased prices in Nuristan.

The bridge was rehabilitation by police and area residents; however, government officials could not travel on it.

The police official promised a massive cleanup operation against insurgents in the district after Eidul Adha festival, according to PAN.
