German-Sweden Funded Hospital Started in Mazar-i-Sharif

An internationally funded 360-bed hospital started operations in Mazar-i-Sharif city, the capital of northern Balkh province on Saturday, officials said.

Jointly funded by Germany and Sweden, the construction of the hospital cost 14 million euros (904.9 million afs) and took two years to complete, public health director Dr. Rabi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said Germany donated 13 million euros, while Sweden contributed one million euros.

Rabi said Japan would also provide modern medical equipments worth $10 million (499.9 million afs) to the hospital.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Public Health Minister Dr. Suraya Dalil described the hospital as one of most advanced medical institutions in the region.

Also present at the ceremony was Germany’s ambassador to Afghanistan Rudiger Konig,

Governor Ata Mohammad Noor and several lawmakers.

Konig said the hospital reflected an exemplary cooperation between Germany and Afghanistan and assured Germany would pledge three million euros until 2013 to help improve the hospital’s human resources.

The governor thanked both Germany and Sweden for their assistance for the hospital that would now provide quality medical care to the people.
