Government Officials Seeking Personal Advantages from Mines

A number of government officials use their authority to intervene in the affairs of mines for the sake of their own advantages.

Minister of Mine Waheedullah Shahrani , while speaking in a Security Council meeting , said “a number of government officials misuse their power and influence and use armed men  in order to obtain benefits from the mines, oil and gas.”

The Security Council meeting was held on Monday at the Presidential Office.

As per complaint of Minister Shahrani, the Security Council decided to act upon this issue. The Council assigned security organs to look out for the protection of mines and ensure the security of the mining process and prevention of any intrusion from anyone.

The security organs shall take serious measures while dealing with violators of law.

Afghanistan is endowed with various natural resources which can potentially alter the country’s economy. However, existence of natural resources opens the doors for further corruption. Transparency and accountability in the management of Afghanistan’s natural resources are important and measures should be taken to prevent the occurrence of ‘resource curse’.
