[1]Every country has a traditional attire which represents its culture and has an intrinsic value to it.

Afghan traditional clothing has always been the beauty of Afghan women, and their clothing fashion is gaining popularity outside of Afghanistan as well.

Many shops in the city of Peshawar in Pakistan are dedicated to making and selling of Afghan traditional clothes. The shopkeepers say that their customers are not only Afghans but Pakistanis as well.

“My name is Gul Mohammad from Jalalabad. I have been living in Peshawar for almost 30 years, and I have been making and selling Afghani dresses since the past twenty years. Before our customers were mainly Afghans. When many Afghans returned to Afghanistan after the withdrawal of Taliban, our business collapsed. Now, our business has revived, as many Pakistani people have grown interest in Afghan traditional clothing.

Afghan traditional attire for women is unique and beautiful, consisting of a long colorful dress with round skirt. The dress is designed with handmade embroidery. The dress comes with a trouser and a head scarf and a flat pair of shoes called Paizar.

“My name is Sayed Jamshid, and I have been selling Afghani clothes in Peshawar for the past 8 years. The materials we use into making these clothes come from Afghanistan or Lahore city of Pakistan. Before, the dresses would be made from velvet, Qanawiz, and Banaras, designed with hand embroidery including different color patterns. Now, we use fabrics like chiffon and Brosha that are affordable for different groups of people.”

“My name is Aiwaz Khan, and I am selling Afghani clothes since 2002. Most of our designs now are machine-made that are prepared in Lahore.”

Shopkeepers in Peshawar say that if they are provided with opportunities, they would exhibit Afghan traditional clothes in all over Pakistan. They would not only introduce Afghan traditional attire to a bigger population in Pakistan but also gain access to a larger market.
