President Karzai calls attention to child labor problems in Afghanistan

child laborPresident Hamid Karzai called on human rights institutions and children rights institution to address the issue of child labor in Afghanistan.

Poverty-struck families send their children out  to carry out harsh manual labor to bring in food to the families.

“We can see in the cities that children are doing more and harder work than they can handle,” Tolo News quotes Karzai. “I want the families to accept challenges themselves and not let their kids do hard labor.”

As per the 46th article of the Work Law, any form of harsh work cannot be done by children of the age of 15 and under.

However, six million Afghan kids are reportedly engaged in harsh manual labor in the absence of proper enforcement of the labor law.

“Families, human rights institutions and children rights institutions are responsible for preventing child labor,” Tolo News quotes Karzai.
