Samangan closes its unsafe coalmines

karkar coal mineAfghan government has pledged to close unsafe coalmines in Dara-i-Suf Bala district of northern Samangan province.

Officials of the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum have taken on the mission to identify all the dangerous coalmines and shutting them down.

This comes a week after 24 miners lost their lives in an explosion inside a mine in the district.

In September of last year, 27 miners died in a mining accident in the coalmines of the Ro Do Aab district of Samangan province.

Petroleum Minister Mohammad Akbar Barakzai said his ministry would launch awareness campaign on halting illegal extraction of coal.
