Samangan’s wheat production 13 times higher than last year’s

This year Samangan’s wheat yield reached 168,000 tons, compared to last year’s 13,000 tons.

Last year wheat yields were hit by fewer rains and drought conditions in the province throughout the year.

According to the acting agriculture director Syed Rafiullah Roshanzada, farmers cultivated 13,500 hectares of irrigated land and 120,000 hectares of rain-fed land this year.

Agriculture minister Mohammad Asif Rahimi said Afghanistan is moving towards self-sufficiency in terms of wheat production, with only 6% of wheat imported from other countries. Before, Afghanistan would import nearly 50% of wheat from other countries.
