School Opening Ceremony in Belambai Village Draws Large Turnout

kandaharPANJWAI DISTRICT, Afghanistan – More than 50 local villagers and district elders attended a school opening ceremony in Belambai village, Panjwai district, Kandahar province, Jan 16.

District Governor Haji Faizal Mohammad, District Minister of Education Izzatullah, District Mullah Shariffuddin and Malik Ahmad Shah visited 20 children and their teacher, Azad Khan in their classroom before the start of the ceremony.

District Mullah Shariffuddin began the ceremony with an opening prayer and a few words before district leaders met with villagers and elders to discuss the school’s success. School attendance increased significantly since the Afghan Local Police program began in Belambai village in December 2012. ALP presence changed the villagers’ perception of security and encouraged parents to send their children to school.

“Without stable security achieving health and education goals are impossible,” said District Governor Haji Faizal Mohammad while addressing the villagers. “The school was established with the assistance of Coalition Forces. You should further assist them to build a stronger community in Belambai.”

District Minister of Education Izzatullah thanked the parents for sending their children to school and the other villagers for attending the school opening ceremony.

“I have an abundant amount of school supplies for all the kids of Belambai village,” said District Minister of Education Izzatullah. “You should all send your children to school.”

“A father’s responsibility is to feed, love and educate his children,” said District Mullah Shariffuddin.
