A total of eight billion Afghanis has been saved from going to waste as a result of scrutiny and oversight of Afghan government’s procurement contracts by the National Procurement Commission (NPC).

Speaking at the weekly meeting of NPC on Saturday, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said the purpose of NPC was to ensure transparency in the government and particularly in the defense ministry procurement contracts.

He added that oversight of the defense ministry contracts was necessary to ensure provision of more facilities and better services to security forces.

In yesterday’s meeting a number of contracts of Public Health, Finance and Defense Ministries, Hajj Commission and new Kabul Bank were reviewed. Some of the contracts were approved and other contracts needed further considerations.

According to a statement from the presidential palace, a total of 1.5bn AFN has been saved in the defense ministry contracts since the Commission’s scrutiny of the contracts.
