USD 65m grant for promoting Afghan agriculture

A budget of USD 65mn is allocated for promoting agriculture in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will pay around USD 40mn from its own budget, while the remaining USD 25mn will be paid by the United States Agency for International Development.

A number of economic analysts believe that the agriculture sector is the key sector for steering the country’s economy towards development.

Afghanistan holds a comparative advantage in its agriculture products relative to its neighboring competitors.

Afghan Agriculture and Livestock Minister Mohammad Asif Rahimi said the ministry is looking to reconstruct the agricultural research programs which will need at least 5 years to start from 16 provinces and expand it to the other provinces of Afghanistan.

He said this will be the first program which will be implemented by ministry of agriculture and livestock of Afghanistan after Tokyo conference.
