Work on key road launched in Badakhshan

Construction work on a 75-kilomentre road was launched in northeastern Badakhshan province on Sunday, officials said.

The 5-metre wide road that connects Maimi and Shaghnan districts is being constructed at a cost of $15 million by the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD), said provincial Rural Rehabilitation and Development Director Eng. Amir Mohammad Yaftali.

He said although the project had one year timescale, it could take two years to complete due to harsh weather conditions.

He hoped the road would enable residents of the two districts to reach the provincial capital, Faizabad, within two days, a distance currently being covered in 12 days after passing through nine districts.

Two big bridges would be constructed as part of the road project involving five local reconstruction firms, he said.

With construction of the road, residents of Maimi would be connected to a bazaar on the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan border and people of the two districts linked with Faizabad through Ishkasham district, he said.
