Afghan calligrapher creates world’s largest Qur’an

Afghanistan is the home for the world’s largest hand written Holy Quran. We have all the right to boast about such a major achievement for the Afghan nation and all Muslims across the globe. The completion of this magnificent art is a major service for the rich history and culture of Afghanistan.

The initiative for the project was proposed and sponsored by Alhaj Syed Mansoor Naderi. The drawing and painting work of the world’s largest Holy Qur’an took almost 5 years to complete by an artistic team under the supervision of Hakim Nasir Khusraw Balkhi.

The composition work was started in September 2004 and was completed in September 2009, with at least two years of continuous work for the shafting and archiving work.

The calligraphy work has been done on 218 pages, having a dimension of 228 cm length and 155 cm width. All the 30 parts of the Holy Quran has been done in 30 different designs. The Afghan Qur’an weighs 500 kg (1,100 lb) and its 218 pages of cloth and paper, bound inside an embossed leather cover made from the skins of 21 goats, cost half a million dollars to create.

The Quran is placed for display in the Nasir Khesraw Balkhi library in Kabul.
