Legendary Musician Hamahang Dies

The legendary Afghan musician Abdul Mohammad Hamahang , 75, passed away Wednesday night in Kabul as a result of a heart attack.

Hamahang was born in Kabul in 1936 and started signing at the age of 11 with music scholars Ustad Rahim Bakhsh, Ustad Shaida and the “king of Afghan music” Ustad Sarahang.

He sang for more than half a century, receiving plenty of awards both inside and outside of the country. His friends and fans called his death a major blow to Afghan music.

He has around 300 songs which are still played on Afghan radio and broadcast.

His body was buried in Kabul’s cemetery Shuhadai Salaheen Thursday morning.
