Premier Wen Jiabao set for 15th China-EU summit

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is set to take part in his last EU-China summit before handing over power later this year.

Mr Wen will be meeting with senior EU figures, including President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso.

According to Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, both sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on lifting the level of China-EU practical cooperation and deepening their  strategic partnership.

In the past, Beijing has expressed its concerns about Europe’s struggling economy and offered assistance.

In a written statement released on his arrival to Brussels on Wednesday, Wen said China and the European Union have forged one of the most influential bilateral relationships in the world, since establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2003.

The EU is now China’s largest export market and the world’s second largest exporter to China.

During his stay, Wen will also be meeting with Belgian leaders on bilateral ties, China-EU relations and other global and regional issues of common concern.

“The visit will further boost China-Belgium mutual political trust and deepen cooperation,” Hong added.
